I just want to curl up with a book, and then nap away the day.
Unfortunately, that's not in the plan for me today.

I laughed out loud.
And I wanted to add it to our library.
I didn't want to wait because seeing him in print brought back so many memories.
You see, Shel is a literary family friend. He was there (not literally) on that day eight years ago when we brought Ella home from the hospital. We began to read Where the Sidewalk Ends to her and to ourselves. His poems and drawings brought some humor into our lives when nothing made sense. Shel fit right in to our world turned upside down.
This week I'd like to give his new book, Every Thing On It, to one of you.
To enter answer this question in the comment section:
Who have been literary friends of yours? Name one, and at least one of their books.
I'll randomly choose a winner on Thursday, October 13th at 12:00 pm. (CST.)
One entry per person.
Have a fabulous week!
I absolutely ADORE Shel Silverstein. I always checked out his books when I was a kid in elementary school. I actually just bought a book from our school bookfair for my mom to give to my kids. Can't wait to read it to the boys. Thanks for the giveaway, this is fun!!
ReplyDeleteI love Linda Lael Miller and her Creed family series. And also Nicholas Sparks, just about any of his books but especially The Wedding.
ReplyDeleteLaura Ingalls Wilder! I can't wait until my girls are a little older so I can start reading them the Little House on the Prairie series.
ReplyDeleteI didn't have to think twice ... why Amelia Bedelia of course! I loved her as a child & I still smile every time I see one of 'her books'. I can't name a specific title to just one (I read them all). It's been years & years & my momma long ago gave my collection away (I know, shame on her! ;) Peggy Parish hit a home run with me when she wrote about a maid who was a bit misunderstood because she didn't appear to be the sharpest knife in the drawer ... Amelia was a friend to all, had a heart of gold & an innocence I miss in today's literary world! Although my oldest granddaughter has fallen in love with 'Junie B. Jones' and I must admit, I'm growing to love her too(she will never take the place of Amelia! ;) You prompted wonderful memories with this post my friend ... thank you! :)
ReplyDeleteNicholas Sparks. I didn't enjoy reading until I came upon his books. I have all of his books in my home library...the only COLLECTION of books I own.
ReplyDelete-Andrea Klenda
Nicholas Sparks! Love his books. One of my favorites...A Painted House.
ReplyDeleteWe love Shel Silverstein too! One of our literary favorites is Jan Brett. My girls love all of her books, and beautiful illustrations - especially The Mitten!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite books to read to Owen are two called "Why I love my Daddy" and "Why I love my Mommy." They are illustrated by Daniel Howarth and taken from children's own words. For myself, my favorite recent author is Lauraine Snelling, who writes inspirational or Christian fiction.
ReplyDeleteI have always loved Shel Silverstein's books too. They were fav's of mine when I was a child.. I loved the Giving Tree... can remember reading it over and over. :) exccited there is a new book of his!
ReplyDeleteLucy Maud Montgomery and Anne of Green Gables feel like old friends. When I read her books I was always lost in the world of Avonlea.
ReplyDeleteEric Carle is a favorite around here.
ReplyDeleteI recently learned you can get free music through your local library (check their website.) Anyway, one of the free options is Shel Siverstein's poems. I thought that would be fun to listen to in the car when Alice is a little older.
I used to read Where the Sidewalk Ends all the time.....my kiddos love the Giving Tree. We have so many favorites at our house....Jan Brett....The Mitten, Laurie Numeroff...If You Give a Pig a Pancake, and of course Dr. Seuss....Green Eggs and Ham!
ReplyDeleteI would have to say Mr. John Steinbeck. Of Mice and Men was the first novel I ever taught, so I obviously learned a million lessons.
ReplyDeleteJoan Walsh Anglund. Her poetry makes me so very happy.
ReplyDeleteI read 2-3 poems to my students every day as part of our calendar time. We start the year with Jack Prelutsky and then read Shel Silverstein the 2nd half. They love him and I love him, too. I didn't know he had a new book!
ReplyDeleteFirst literary friend that comes to mind is JK Rowling and her Harry Potter series. She was the one that got me into books in the first place. :)
ReplyDeleteLove Love Love Shel Silverstein - I have the fondest memories of my Nana reading his poems to me when I was little.
ReplyDeleteso many literary friends to pick from for me...C.S. Lewis and his ever famous The Chronicles of Narnia. I can't wait for my little reader to be old enough to fall in love with this series too!
Oh, from my childhood I have to say Laura Ingalls Wilder and her book Little House on the Prairie. From my pre-teen years, I would have to say Lucy Maude Montgomery and her Anne of Green Gables series. Now, I love all books and authors! But I love reading Dr. Seuss' Oh the Places You'll go to my daughter.

Oh my goodness!! I had no idea he had a new book! Exciting!!! Ok, so my literary BFF is L.M. Montgomery, amazing author of Anne of Green Gables. I've read everything she has written...even all of her short stories. In high school, my parents took me to Prince Edward Island, where Montgomery was from & where her books were set. Hands down one of my BEST vacations. Even stayed with one of her cousins at their farmhouse B&B!!! And it does sound silly, but she seems like a friend. I've spent the majority of my life reading & rereading her work. I feel like I know her...... ;)
ReplyDeleteOurs would have to be Ian Falconer and the Olivia series. When my oldest daughter (named Olivia) was born, my mom brought a stuffed Olivia and books with her. Even though she's 8 now, sometimes she still pulls them out and reads them to me :)
ReplyDeleteAmanda
Reading has LONG been my favorite pasttime, so I have many, many "favorites"! Probably, alltime favorite is L.M. Montgomery, author of Anne of Green Gables series! I just love all the situations young Anne gets herself into...and her relationships with her adopted parents. Then when she is older, love that her "spunky" personality is still so evident. The paperback boxed set was the first complete set of books I ever received as a gift, and I still have it...
ReplyDeletejane austen, l. m. montgomery, lynne reid banks, nancy drew, john knowles, j.d. salinger...so many!
